Image
Coloradoans LOVE their craft beer! There are so many breweries and so many options of craft beers to try. We love visiting new breweries and tasting new beers. We have created a list of some must-do beer experiences and breweries to visit in Colorado that we encourage you to check out. Colorado brewing history... Brewing beer has a long history in Colorado. The first locally brewed keg of beer was tapped in Denver in 1859. Frederick Salomon & John Good opened the first Denver brewery in December, 1859 called Rocky Mountain Brewery which was located in Auraria at 10th and St. Louis (Larimer) Streets, where Auraria Campus now sits - which eventually became Tivoli Brewery. In 1873, Adolph Coors and Jacob Schueler immigrated from Germany to the United States and opened Golden Brewery, which was renamed Coors in 1880. By 1982, there were 23 breweries in operation in Colorado. Obviously, during prohibition, the brewing industry waned, however, in 1945 an advertising campaign stating “Bee...

The Great American Beer Festival - 2022

Image
The Great American Beer Festival is a craft beer connoisseur's dream!  We were thrilled to attend the Great American Beer Festival this year, as it was the 40th anniversary. It was so much fun to taste beers from breweries across the nation, but impossible to try them all. To be completely honest, it was a bit overwhelming with so many people, so many breweries, so many beers...but a whole lot of fun. How the Great American Beer Festival came to be... The craft beer culture in the United States as we know it today kicked off in 1978,  when President Jimmy Carter signed a bill (H.R. 1337) legalizing homebrewing.   In the early 1970s, Charlie Papazian, a teacher and homebrewer living in Boulder, Colorado started teaching homebrewing from his home. Soon after, in 1978, Charlie founded the American Homebrewers Association (AHA), a national organization devoted to supporting amateur brewers. At the 4th annual American Homebrewers Association annual conference in 1982, the fi...

BREWABILITY LAB -- A FEATURED DENVER BREWERY

Image
As lovers of craft beer and  privately owned breweries, Colorado is a great place to live. With over 400 breweries located in our beautiful state and over 140 of them in the Denver area, we could easily go to a different brewery every weekend. How great is this! We very much enjoy tasting new beers, experiencing the atmosphere of different locations and meeting new people along the way. We typically like to share our vacations that include some interesting and enjoyable breweries, as well as brewery hops, as we think this is a fun way to spend an afternoon.   We recently visited a brewery that we have wanted to check out for a while now - Brewability Lab and just had to write about it. Hopefully, we encourage others to check it out as well. Brewability is located at 3445 S Broadway, Englewood, Colorado, which is just a bit south of downtown Denver on Broadway. This bright, open concept brewery and pizzeria intentionally employs and welcomes people of all abilities. In...

Celebrate Diversity in the Brewing Industry in Colorado

Image
As craft beer connoisseurs, we love visiting local craft breweries across our home state and the country. We enjoy tasting a wide variety of beers while experiencing different atmospheres which create a special mood.  We take joy in learning about the history of the brewery and journey of the owners of each brewery. We are often excited when we learn about a Latin inspired or Jamaican themed brewery. We love when we find a woman owned brewery and hear the passion in the owner's voice as she shares her story. According to the Brewers Association ,  craft brewer volume sales grew 8% in 2021 and now holds almost 27% of the US beer market. This wonderful, growing industry is a great opportunity for many who love craft beers, however, 93.5% of craft brewery owners are white and only 2.9% are 100% owned by women. It is exciting that the Brewers Association is working to support the craft beer industry in becoming more diverse through education and grants. With this in mind, ...
