Brewery Hop in Santa Fe, New Mexico
We went to Santa Fe for a long weekend get-away. Santa Fe is beautiful with its view of the mountains and Pueblo style architecture. We loved learning about the history and culture, visiting the beautiful Loretto Chapel and St. Francis Cathedral, strolling through the Canyon Road Arts District and eating the mouthwatering New Mexico cuisine. And then...we decided to take a day and do a Brewery Hop.
Santa Fe is not necessarily known for its craft brewery scene, however, the Santa Fe Brewing Company dates back to 1988 and the Second Street Brewery has been in operation since 1996. The city of Santa Fe is currently the home of 8 different craft breweries, 3 of which have 2 locations each. We encourage you to try all 8, however, there are 5 within walking distance of the Santa Fe plaza.
History of Santa Fe
Santa Fe was originally home to several Pueblo Indian villages. In the early 17th century, the Spanish Empire arrived and declared the area the "Kingdom of New Mexico." In 1607, Santa Fe's first population of Europeans built a small clutter of European type houses in the area. For much of the 17th century, Spanish soldiers and Franciscan missionaries worked to conquer and convert the Pueblo Indians until, in 1680, the Pueblo Indians revolted and took control of Santa Fe for 12 years. In 1692, the Spanish reconquered the area. When Mexico gained it's independence from Spain, Santa Fe became the capital of the province of New Mexico. Prior to the United States taking it over in 1846, Santa Fe was the Spanish Empire's seat of power north of the Rio Grande. Santa Fe is the oldest European community west of the Mississippi and the oldest capital city in the United States.
New Mexico gained statehood in 1912 and many were drawn to Santa Fe for the weather and climate. In 1917, the Museum of Fine Arts opened, with a focus on local history and native culture and set the stage for the Santa Fe of today. Today, the city has preserved and celebrates the traditions, culture and architecture of it's rich heritage.
